When traveling around Suzhou, particularly from our locations near Taihu Lake, using ride-hailing services via Alipay's DiDi mini-program is highly recommended. Given your proximity to Taihu Lake, travel by car or ride-hailing (like DiDi, which functions as China's equivalent to Uber) will be the most efficient and convenient method for visiting us.
Here's why and how to make the most of it:
- No Uber in China: It's important to note that Uber itself doesn't operate in mainland China. DiDi (滴滴) is the dominant ride-hailing service, and it's integrated into popular apps like Alipay.
- Alipay's DiDi Mini-Program for Foreigners:
- Foreigner-friendly: Alipay has an international version that allows foreigners to link international credit/debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, JCB, etc.) and use their foreign phone numbers for registration.
- English Interface: The DiDi mini-program within Alipay typically offers an English interface, making it easy to navigate.
- No Chinese SIM required: You don't necessarily need a Chinese SIM card to use it, though a stable internet connection (via Wi-Fi or international roaming) is essential.
- Seamless Payment: Once your international card is linked to Alipay, payments for DiDi rides are processed automatically within the app, removing the need for cash or local payment methods.
- How to access: After downloading the Alipay app and setting your region to mainland China, search "DiDi", which will lead you to the DiDi mini-program.
- Communication: The app often includes in-app translation tools to help you communicate with your driver, and you can share photos of your pickup location for clarity.
Before your trip:
- Download Alipay: Download the Alipay app and complete the registration process, including identity verification (which may involve scanning your passport and a selfie) and linking your international bank card. Doing this before you arrive in China can save you time and potential hassle.
- Ensure Internet Access: Have a plan for internet access (e.g., an international roaming package, a local eSIM, or a portable Wi-Fi device) as it's crucial for using the app.
